Extension and Refurbishment of a
Victorian House in Portobello
This project involved the conversion of a house
previously subdivided into flats back into a
family home. A complete refurbishment was
required to the main house and a new kitchen/
dining extension was added. The rear of the
house was east facing and the existing return
was on the southern side of the house thereby
blocking sunlight for most parts of the day from
the main rooms to the rear of the house, this
being quite a common problem in houses
throughout the terraced redbricked areas of
Dublin. The new extension’s footprint steps
out in a manner that provides south facing
windows and large glazed sliding doors were
introduced. The new east and south facing
windows and the careful positioning of new
rooflights transform the previously dark and
dreary spaces at the back of the house into
light filled rooms.
